About everyday
What is everyday?everyday is a simple and beautiful habit tracker, an application that helps you
track your habits and get disciplined. everyday's habit board provides an at a
glance overview of all the habits you are pushing for making it easy to keep them in
mind whilst seeing which ones you are doing good at and which ones you need to push
harder for. It helps you make yourself accountable of your own goals and progress.
How is everyday going to help me achieve my goals? The premise is that the best way to reach your goals is to work on them EVERY DAY.
Of course, that's easier said than done. But taking from the great quote "Every day
it gets a little easier, but you gotta do it every day, that's the hard part",
we understand that if we manage to do things every day, to form new habits, it will
become gradually easier and we will succeed.
everyday helps us form chains, consecutive days in which we have done an habit.
The idea that the more days in a row we manage to fulfill a task (e.g do 50 pushups)
the longer the chain becomes and thus, we are more motivated to keep increasing our
streak. We just make that extra effort to keep the chain alive! In other words,
don't break the chain for as long as you can and without noticing, you'll have
embraced such task into your daily routine, helping you towards your goals.
everyday increases the color tone by every new chained day, which adds a little
bit of motivation and ultimately makes our board look beautiful. The more we do,
the prettier it looks!
everyday sends email reminders the most important of which is the "don't skip
twice" which helps you remind not to skip doing an habit twice. Breaking a chain
after a few days it's normal, just forgive yourself and start a new one! It's much
easier to lose a routine than to form a new one, so reminders help you make sure not
to lose the so hardly earned progress!
If you measure it, you can improve it.
How can I make the best out of tracking my habits with everyday?Let's be honest here, the most important thing here is commitment from your side.
With that being said, my recommendation would be to start by adding few habits you
would like to form and make sure to read them at least once a day. A good way to make
sure of that is to either add the application as a pinned tab on your web browser, or
to set it as your homepage. The first step is to have such goals in mind as much as
possible.
Then, it's time to get started, it will sound dumb but, just start. Your goal is
50 pushups a day and you did 5 today? That's already an awesome job!! Just go and mark
the habit on everyday. This is very important, do a little bit EVERY DAY, no
matter how little. Some days you will feel you haven't really accomplished your daily
goal, while some other you'll do more than expected. That's normal. Just make sure to
do it as many days as possible without breaking the chain.
I know, it's very hard to do things every day, there are weekends, holidays, etcetera.
We all skip days. Again, that's normal. If you skip a day, breaking your so hardly
accomplished long chain, don't worry. Forgive yourself and start a new one as soon as
possible. I can't stress enough how important it is to not skip twice. everyday
helps in that regard with reminders.
Finally, this is one of the ways in which I use everyday that I think it's
valuable sharing. We all have big goals/dreams that are easy to overlook on our busy
daily lives. These might even be very hard to track, maybe they are not even
quantifiable. For example, one of my habits is "become a better person". What can I
do every day to become a better person? It's not so easy to track. So, the way I use
everyday is to have some "short-term habits" with one color, and other
"long-term goals" in another color. I then divide my long-term goals into more
quantifiable short-term goals. I try to divide and conquer my more abstract goals.
For example, "help someone", "learn something", "write", "listen to others",
"be honest", etcetera. These are much easier to go through every day and think "have
I helped someone today?". I like it because it helps me think every day on what I want
to accompish in the long run and work towards it on a daily basis.
At the time of writing this I have 23 habits on my list, just so you get an idea.
everyday is very flexible. Just find the way it works best for you!
Which are some good habits to begin with? This really depends on your goals. You might want to start with some habits you have
already been working on but you still don't consider part of your routine.
I'll give some general ideas:
- Meditate
- Talk to a stranger
- Wake up early
- Write
- Go for a walk
- Learn something
- Cook my own food
- Read
- Work out
- Eat healthy
- Play an instrument
- Have a good attitude
- Work on everyday ( ;D )
What is the application developed in?Beware! This question is for techies :P
The application uses React, Redux, Webpack and SASS on the frontend and Koa (Node.js),
Knex.js and MySQL on the backend. The webserver is Caddy.
The mobile application is developed with React Native.
Features
What are the numbers on the right side?On the right side you can see three columns of numbers. "Current streak" is the number of
days you have managed to chain the habit until today. This is the number you have to keep
increasing! "Longest streak" is your personal record of the highest number of days you
have ever managed to chain such habit. This is the number you have to beat! Finally, the
third column is a count of the total of times you've done such habit.
By moving the slider you can see the counts by year, month and week. Finally, you can
also see the yearly, monthly and weekly completion rates.
What are the numbers under the board? These numbers are just a count of the number of habits you have completed each day. These
numbers are useful to compare in a day to day basis. Did I complete more habits today
than yesterday? It's just another way to keep accountable of your progress.
Can I define the order in which I see the habits on the board?Yes, just click on an habit name and drag it up or down.
How am I supposed to use the color options? My idea with everyday is to make it as minimal and flexible as possible. In the end
the power of paper is flexibility, so we need o try to make applications get as close to
that as possible. The option to use colors allows you to use them as you wish. Some
people will just use the color scale they like better while other's will use it as
separators, or to categorize habits by type. For example, habits related to health and
fitness can be green, while habits related to reading and learning can be blue. The
important thing is to get to have a pretty board because it will mean you are doing a
damn good job!
Can I share my boards with everyone? Not yet (as of June 2018). But this is certainly something that I want to bring into
everyday. Sharing our progress helps motivate us. If you would really like to have
this feature please make sure to contact me at joan@everyday.app and let's talk
about it, I really want to learn from you how do you expect this to work. For example,
the option to hide some habits from the public board might be relevant.
Does everyday work on mobile?Yes! As a web application you can access everyday from your mobile phone browser
and mark habits from there! It's responsive design adapts the board to your mobile
phone screen. However, the beauty of the board is mostly lost so I recommend using the
mobile application that allows for more flexibility while preserving the minimalist and
beautiful approach.
Does everyday have a native mobile application? As of June 2018: Yes it does! Find a link to it on the devices section of this website
and let me know what you think!
Is there any option to have the application in another language? At the moment the application only exists in english. It's prepared to handle other
languages but right now I am waiting to see how critical it is. If you'd like to see
the application in your language, make sure to let me know at joan@everyday.app!
There are habits I do on specific days of the week, will everyday support them? This is an issue that comes up every once in a while. I can't say the application will
never support it but right now it's not in the roadmap. Since my goal is to have a
beautiful, minimal and flexible application this feature would pose a real threat.
The main idea of everyday is to target things that must be done EVERY DAY.
However, the skip option allows for enough flexibility, so that you can skip the days
the habit doesn't apply in. With the "no weekends" option, everyday will automatically
skip weekends for you so that you can focus on your every weekday habits :)
There's a feature I'd really like to have. Can you implement it?Let's talk about it! Shoot me an email at joan@everyday.app!
I like the minimalist approach. How will you deal with adding new features versus
keeping it simple? As a computer engineer and product person it's very easy for me to just come up with
new solutions, features, etcetera. However, what brought me substantial success with
everyday was to learn to discard features, to keep the application as simple and
beautiful as possible while preserving it's flexibility. This is what my users value
and this is my goal number one. I'll really make sure to not clutter the application
with useless features or features that only make happy a very small % of the user base.
I don't need to keep adding features to justify the price of the application. The main
goal of the application is to really make it easy for the users to benefit from using
it.

Is my personal information safe?Yes. I am the only person with access to the server. The server is hosted by Amazon, a
renowned dedicated server company. I do regular backups. I have absolutely no intention
of sharing your data. Charging to subscribe for the app allows me to cover the costs to
run everyday without needing to find alternative unmoral business models.
I like the app but I don’t like to give my credit card details to strangers...
what can I do?everyday uses Stripe.com as a payment method. Stripe.com is a trustworthy payment
solution that precisely works to solve this kind of issue. By using Stripe, your credit
card information securely travels between your web browser and Stripe servers.
everyday never sees any credit card information, it just gets notified by Stripe
of when a payment has been done.
What payment methods do you offer?Right now, everyday uses Stripe.com as the unique payment method. This payment
method ensures your credit card information to be securely sent to their servers
without the end products (in this case, everyday) ever seeing any of your credit
card details. This makes it easier for you, and also for me.
I am considering allowing payments via Paypal in the future.
Why isn't everyday free?A project has to be sustainable, or shut down.
Paying $29.99/year ensures that the costs to run everyday are covered, that the app
will be there helping us EVERY DAY, forever, and motivates me to keep improving it
with your feedback.
It shows you care.
Not convinced? Read what Maciej from Pinboard wrote on the topic or shoot me an email!
How do I delete my account? From the application settings, you have the option to delete your account :( If you, by
any chance end up deciding to delete your account, I'll appreciate if you give me any
feedback on how I could have made the application better for you :)
